  • Antique Wood Gauri Gangaur Figure

Carved hardwood Gauri Gangaur statue, southern Rajasthan, India. Teak. Early 19th century.

Dedicated to the goddess Gauri (or Pavarti), the wife of Shiva, these statues are given as votive offerings by women during the Gangaur festival. Historically, Gangaur figures were made of wood or clay, carved into the semblance of Gauri and often painted. Modern figures may be made from a range of materials.

Antique Gauri statues are often highly valued and are rare. This statue dates from the early 1800's and has a beautiful patina commensurate with its age. One arm shows old damage, with the forearm broken off.

    Measurements: height 21.5 cm (8.5")
