  • Antique Wood Shiva Gangaur Figure

Carved hardwood Shiva Gangaur statue, southern Rajasthan, India. Rosewood. Late 19th century. The statue wears two metal bands as anklet decoration, tribal dress and some damage to his arms.

These Shiva statues are given as votive offerings during the Gangaur festival. Historically, Gangaur figures were made of wood or clay, carved into the semblance of Shiva and often painted. Modern figures may be made from a range of materials.

Antique statues are often highly valued and are becoming rarer. This statue dates from the late 1800's and has a beautiful patina commensurate with its age.
