Pure loban is burnt in places of worship to create a holy, sanctified atmosphere. It is also considered to be an anti-depressant and mood enhancer, as well as an effective insect repellant.

It is a common ingredient in incense-making and perfumery because of its vanilla ice-cream aroma and fixative properties.
