Items like this are rare and unusual. This is a small, screw-top canister carved from a fine, densely grained hardwood in the image of the Buddha, complete with elongated ear lobes, top knot and eyes downcast in sublime contemplation. It's original purpose is unknown, however it may have been used to hold aromatic paste used in puja type ceremonies. Dating from around 1910, we have managed to find two of these unusual items. Bought in Mumbai but originally from the south of India.
