Russian Orthodox church communion chalice. Early 20th century. Engine turned brass with elaborate inlay enamel decoration in white with blue, yellow and red highlights. The enamel work is very worn and rubbed in places.
This is a piece with real history. It most likely originated in a provincial Russian village church and was obtained by collector and dealer Bernard Heaphy in the 1980's on his buying trip through Central Asia via the Silk Road.
