  • Large Antique Rare Konso Waaga Figure From Ethiopia

Old and rare large Konso Waaga figure and grave marker. Early 20th century or earlier.

Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Set with bone disk eyes and two teeth shaped from a lighter piece of wood, he also displays warrior markings on his cheeks. A third tooth is absent. He wears a warrior’s bracelet on his left arm and stacked bracelets on his right arm. His hand rests on his phallus (unlike figures of castrated, defeated warriors) and there is another phallus carved on his forehead, called a halasha, an ornament indicative of the man's high status. The bone eyes, jewellery and phallusesall emphasise his warrior prowess and in Konso culture are reserved for depictions of a man who has killed one or more enemies in battle. He was once most likely to be the central carving of a group which would have included his wives and victims.

A waaga or waga is a memorial statue, also known as a stelae, carved to represent deceased male ancestors, specifically those who have achieved high status or demonstrated bravery within their lifetime, ie heroes, certain religious dignitaries, and warrior-hunters. The statues celebrate shared experiences and values as well as an individual's achievements. They are placed on or near graves on platforms, alongside other sculptures, as a form of commemoration and are a significant aspect of Konso culture. This ongoing Konso memorial practice has precedents dating back as far as the eleventh century.

There are 200,000 Konso confined to a homeland of less than 1000 square kilometres. The Konso believe that they have always lived in this small hilly territory in the far southwest of Ethiopia, and this appears to be true for at least 5000 years of their history, allowing their distinct and remarkable culture to develop in virtual isolation.
