Aramudi pendant, a traditional ornament worn by South India girls. Made of sterling silver quality or higher, and featuring a typical teardrop shape and floral design. From southern India, where amulets of this type are worn for protection. But they also represent the power of women, connection and unity. Mid 20th century.
Arai means "loin" and mudi means "cover". Historically the aramudi served as a modesty plate or amulet for young Tamil girls. They were large and were worn around the waist, often alongside other amulets worn for protection.
