This hinged cuff bracelet is worn on the forearm and is also known as a tubular armlet. Created from heavy sheet silver and formed into a tapered tube, our cuff is decorated with embossed geometric borders and images of plant fronds. The top and bottom of the cuff is edged with a double row of blunt spikes. These have a threefold purpose: they add a decorative deign element, they reinforce the bracelet and they can be used for defensive purpose.
Early 20th century, Pakistan. High grade silver with a row of green and red glass "gemstones", with one stone missing. The cuff closes with a pin, in this case made from brass and not original to the bracelet. Collected by Kashgar founder Bernie Heaphy in 2005.
Bracelets of this type were worn from Afghanistan to Pakistan to west India and formed an integral part of a woman's decorative dowry and her savings.
