This hinged cuff is known as a chur bracelet.
High grade silver, early 20th century. The cuff is hinged, and while it originally would have a long pin to secure it in place, the pin is now missing. However the cuff easily and securely clicks into place and a securing pin is completely unnecessary.
Typically found in the Sindh region of Pakistan, versions of this heavy cuff are also found in adjoining parts of India. The shape of this bracelet is defined by its defensive function, for the protection of its woman owner.
This particular example is adorned with stones of glass and resin, suggesting it may have originated in (or travelled to) further west, towards Afghanistan. It was collected by Bernard Heaphy, founder of Kashgar, in the 1980's in northwest frontier Pakistan.
