    Toma Mask

    Toma landai initiation mask. Toma people, Guinea, west Africa. Wood and white pigment. Oval shaped with strong abstracted features and a smaller face at the base of the mask. The condition of this mask is very good. Mid to late 20th Century.

    The Toma people live in high-altitude rain forests across the Guinea-Liberia-Sierra Leone border. They organise their life according to regulations set down by the porosociety, which is responsible for the initiation of young boys. The landai masks symbolise the legendary ancestor and speak a secret language, appearing in public when it is time for male youths to be initiated into adulthood. The mask's image represents an important forest spirit which manifests the power of poro; symbolically the spirit devours boys, allowing them to rebirth as men.
