Woven Kutchi Tent Band

Intricately woven tent band. Afghanistan, early 20th century. Excellent condition, with elaborate fringing on both sides and richly interwoven end tassels.

Luxuriously woven in the dark colours beloved by the nomadic Kutchi Afghanis, including shades of brown, deep reds and indigo on a cream ground, with mustard detailing on the end tassels. 

Diamond woven panels are interspersed with tighter bands of decorative weaving. Reinforced bands connect to heavy round plaited ropes that were used to tie off the band to where the roof and walls of the tent met.

In Afghanistan these woven bands were traditionally used to create tension when tent poles were erected and simultaneously add luxurious decoration to the living space.

Measurements: approximately 5 metres in length including end tassels. Length is 4.3 metres without end tassels. Width of band 14 cm without fringing.
