  • Antique Wood Gangaur Figure

Carved hardwood Gangaur statue, southern Rajasthan, India. Late 19th century.

Dedicated to the goddess Gauri (or Pavarti), the wife of Shiva, these statues are given as votive offerings during the Gangaur festival. Historically, Gangaur figures were made of wood or clay, carved into the semblance of Gauri and often painted. Modern figures may be made from a range of materials.

Antique statues are often highly valued and are becoming rarer. This statue dates from the late 1800's and has a beautiful patina commensurate with its age.
