  • Small Silver Italian Cherub Bell

Small, decorative bell with winged putto and dolphin. Marked 800 for 80% pure silver. Italy.

A charming, decorative bell with a sweet tone, from the vicinity of Naples, Italy. Its slender handle is surmounted by a winged putto, or cherub, clasping a dolphin. The figure appears inspired by Verrocchio's famous Putto with a Dolphin, made around 1470 and now in Florence's Palazzo Vecchio. The bell bears an "800" silver fineness mark inside the rim, along with a second, indistinct maker's mark. It displays a dark, uneven patina, surface wear and decorative detailing to the bell's exterior.

Putti are common in Renaissance and Baroque painting and sculpture, where they represent love, playfulness or a heavenly presence.

Maker and date unidentified. Wear and patina indicate some age, ie vintage.

Measurements: Height 6.4 cm. Diameter of bell's base 2.2 cm.
