Demons verses saints: detail of a painting by Andrea di Bonaiuto, Cappellone degli Spagnoli.
Since the dawn of human civilisation, mankind has attempted to rationalise its primeval fear of the unknown by creating order out of chaos and by categorising its understanding of the concept of death. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the continuum of civilisation collectively described as western. With its earliest roots in the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Arabia, Mesopotamia and Assyria, the idea of good versus evil was progressively quantified and refined by assigning names to positive characteristics such as happiness, inspiration and good fortune, and to negative characteristics such as sloth and greed, but also to ailments of the body and the mind such as depression, epilepsy, blindness and headache. During the time of the ancient Greeks a word was found to describe this entire class of characteristics defined as spirits: daimon, later to become daemon or demon. Almost simultaneously, popular Hebrew mythology encompassed by the Semitic tribes of the Middle East began to ascribe to the daimons a certain independence of will, at first both positive and negative, but then with increasingly malicious intention. And thus the modern definition of demon was born: a supernatural being with malevolent purpose, able to possess the living and interfere with their destinies. As Judaism and Christianity came to the fore and absorbed the traditions of Greco-Roman magic, Hebrew demonology and Near Eastern pagan mythology, the list of demons grew to include many ordinary idols and gods re-evaluated as undesirable, evil, and ultimately, as competition for the One True God.
The existence of demons remains an important concept in many modern cultures and religions, for a variety of reasons: their supposed power to possess the living, their ability to alter future events through whim or fancy and (less fashionable in today’s modern world of technology) their ability to grant advantages and powers over fortune and destiny. At various times in Christian history, attempts have been made by the church to classify demonic beings according to various hierarchies. The result is an astoundingly long, and dare I say it, tedious list, with each demon appended characteristics, likes, dislikes, habits, powers and specific appearances, all the better to control them. However its very complexity is fascinating to the modern reader and at the very least, provides us with a useful resource for naming heavy metal bands, populating fantasy RPG games and providing interesting characters for films about the Apocalypse.

To create an exhaustive list of all the demons of the world was beyond the scope of this article. Principally a list of Judaic and Christian demons with a few earlier references thrown in, I've kept out angels with terrifying day-jobs as well as some of the more abstract personifications of evil known to Hinduism, Zoastrasiscim and other Eastern religions. This list has been compiled from several sources, principally Wikipedia and the Mostropedia. If you have any significant alterations or additions you can reach me via the comments section at the bottom of the page or via email right here.

I came here looking for the original names and deification of these entities BEFORE the Abrahamic religions got their hands on them and demonized them. A surefire way to know an entity has been demonized is it being references as a child eater, blood drinker, or consumer of flesh as early Christians and Jews did not have broad imagination and often associated each other with these actions.

Once upon a time, I would have read every word of this with fascination. Now, since gaining understanding, I say “Holy Cross of Christ” and be out as soon as possible.

Wow, super interesting and comprehensive list! It’s so strange how “demonologist” used to be an actual profession. All these things that are now superstition used to be concrete enough for professions studying it to exist. It sounds a little weird, but I feel like the world was less “real” a couple hundred years ago. Kind of disappointing that none of these things really exist — demons, magic, fairies. Now it’s all just myth. The world seems so… uninteresting.

Seriously……….I was a Christian. Now im not. Not anything really. Just me. Thats all. Why do people make all of this stuff out to seem real, true, and apart of the reality we live in? Demons? Angels? Gods? Ghosts? Spirits? Heaven? Hell? They are really just figments of ancient people’s imaginations and vivid hallucinations induced and driven through and by their fears of the unknown. Maybe? They saw something and had a bad nightmare or didn’t understand the animal of whatever they were looking at and it terrified them. This seems to be the most accurate and down to earth understanding of the reason why we have religions and spiritualities in the first place. I really just want to scream at the world and tell them to let it go. Let it all go. Let religion and spirituality die already. At its most foundational aspects, its all superstition. We really don’t need a God or Gods to tell us what to do and we don’t need a God or Gods to be moral good people. We certainly don’t need a God or Gods for protection either if we are taught how to protect ourselves by the older generations around us. We don’t even need a God or Gods to heal physically mentally and emotionally. We have modern medicines and modern therapies for both mind, body, and soul. So why cant people just let it go already?! Im sighing in frustration. 😩😒🤦😞😫 We see people dying everyday across the world. Children dying of cancer, starvation, abuse, and at the early age of 3 months. We have women, girls, young men, and little boys getting raped by pedophiles and murderers. And its been like this since ancient times…..except in ancient times it was way worse. Way waaaay worse. Yeah, slavery for instance. Where were the Gods all this time? I cant even blame anything on demons. “Oh the world is bad because of demons.” No. Like really? 🙄 I thought Gods were supposed to be all powerful creating beings who can create entire universes with a flick of their wrists and they cant stop one or multiple measly peons seeking destruction on earth, the earth they created, in the universe that they flicked their wrist into existence? Maybe their really just a bunch of pedophilic, rapist, murdering sociopaths and psychopaths who made us for their entertainment. Why worship them if they don’t even give two fucks about humans in the first place?(so many religions and spiritualities say that Gods have some type of investment in humans and (or) that they care and are looking at us and its confusing as shit.) 🙄 Ridiculous.

If anyone needs to know anything about the demons attached to their person, I can provide this information. Not of myself but of the God I serve. I have been used to tell people when demons became attached. The actions. The effects. The names. I have cast out demons of cancer. Anger. Etc. All the things you are asking, my God can do. I command you, unclean spirit, whoever you are, along with all your minions now attacking this servant of God, by the mysteries of the incarnation, passion, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, by the descent of the Holy Spirit, by the coming of our Lord for judgment, that you tell me by some sign your name, and the day and hour of your departure. I command you, moreover, to obey me to the letter, I who am a minister of God despite my unworthiness; nor shall you be emboldened to harm in any way this creature of God, or the bystanders, or any of their possessions.

Anyone know anything about any of the fallen being capable of incarnating as humans? I know there are many “Kings, Princes, Generals” and various other higher ranking Demonic entities but we must remember that a whole third of the host of Heaven fell with the first. These too must also now be Demonic entities as well. With their own names and specific capabilities. We can’t really just assume these fallen are soul-less. For I can see into the eyes of many and some are not the typical human sheep. Some harbor flames. Kind of like myself. There’s just a knowing, Deep rooted.

When I was 2 or 3, there was a demon that would follow me around. He looked like a middle aged man with salt/pepper colored hair and short beard. His clothes were like a dark suit with what looked like a top hat. He used to show up when I was playing with my toys and told me that he “was going to take (me) with him”. I told my mother what he said and she told me to tell him he couldn’t play with me anymore and to go away. After I did, he started following me to my aunt’s house (1hr away), restaurants, etc. and wouldn’t leave me alone. My mom ended up calling a priest to bless the house and perform exorcism of the house. He quit talking to me and physically manifesting but could still tell he was there. I called him the “Uggy(Ugly?) Man” Before moving to another house, he showed up again, and another was with him, he called himself Jacob, had black hair and green eyes. “Jacob” communicates with me telepathically and has been following me around since. I’ve been trying to find out which demon he is, and obviously can’t find anything. I keep thinking maybe I’m imagining it. I asked one night to give me some sort of sign that he’s real and I’m not crazy. 10 minutes later, as I’m almost asleep, I hear a guttural voice speaking in a language that made the atmosphere vibrate. It was first time being frozen with fear. Any help on identifying this demon would be greatly appreciated. Only info he has given me is that he hates my husband or any guy I’m with and he has been around since beginning of world. Thanks!

Hello,
I found this article very interesting but am still having no luck in the information I am trying to find. I cannot find it anywhere on the internet, only that he is a God – which does not make sense.
I recently saw a Witch/Clairvoyant and he advised me I had the Demon called either Shiba, or Shiva attached to me. He said this Demon attached itself to me from a child and promotes negative thoughts – in hopes of suicide. He cast a spell to remove this demon, to then do an exorcism after I had left the room. I do not know if this was true but it obviously left an imprint on my mind! and have been trying to research into this Demon ever since. I have had no luck.
I wondered if you would be able to share anything on this subject?
Thank you.

In response to Meghan. The demon with the spade shaped head is Oiphaia from ancient Babylon. The demons connotation in modern times is two fold. The first is treachery of vile intent, he wants you to ‘sip [HIS] poisoned chalice’ and then take your soul captive, the second is that he wants you to fall in love quickly and without remorse. Either way he is a bad omen.
To dispel Oiphaia you need to drink pure mulberry juice under the light of the full moon once every three months. Call him by his name to summon him. You seem strong enough to identify him for he usually tries to remain cloaked in shadow. Bequest him like a true woman, to be your pet or servant. If he believes you the curse will be reversed and the universe will call you to be its steward eternally.

Found this compilation exceedingly helpful, so thank you. This not being my area of expertise, I was wondering if you could perhaps narrow things down for me a little, or at least direct me to someone or something that can. I’m trying to identify a (possible) demon that appeared in a dream in the form of a strange balck snake with a spade shaped head. I realize that this might be sorta generic, but I’m at a bit of a loss as to who to turn to for this kind of help.

Kashgar began through a love of travel.
In 1989 my father Bernard packed in his house painting business and set off for two years on a backpacking trek to the remotest corners of the world. When he finally arrived in the oasis city of Kashgar, China, he was so impressed with its history that he decided to start a new life collecting and selling exotic goods from all over the world. For 2000 years the legendary city of Kashgar was a melting pot of ideas and a key trading post on the historic Silk Road. It was this unique combination of philosophy and trade that my father wanted to recreate at home.
Starting in markets in 1991, he opened his first store in the Sydney suburb of Newtown in 1994. I gave up my own career as a government scientist to join him in 2000 and soon convinced my partner Ian to join us in what was to become the Family Business.
Today our version of Kashgar stocks a hugely diverse range of furniture, rugs, textiles, antiques, handicrafts and jewellery sourced from over twenty different countries including India, Nepal, Tibet, China, Thailand, Burma, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mexico, Peru, Turkey, Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Our collection includes contemporary and tribal silver and gold jewellery, a unique range of headhunting curios, antique Buddhist relics and a collection of one-off necklaces, earrings and bracelets that I design and create myself using the beads and jewellery making techniques of ethnic minorities from around the globe.
Kashgar is a philosophy as well as a store. We are committed to supporting traditional artisans and small village communities by selling authentic handcrafted goods which are personally collected by us. By supporting traditional methods of design and production we hope to encourage local cottage industries which have a low impact on the environment and help ethnic minorities maintain their self-sufficiency into the 21st Century. We are particularly committed to assisting women around the world and to this end have worked with several organisations including the Hua Bin Women's Union of Vietnam, the East Timorese Women's Association and Tikondane in Zambia. Time honoured means of craftsmanship and traditional ways of life are disappearing as people all over the world give up their identity in favour of jeans and T-shirts. We see our trade as a means of staving off the inevitable encroachment of the 21st century, assisting communities to decide for themselves which parts of the western world they wish to incorporate (medicine, education) and which they wish to reject (prostitution, drug production, begging and servitude to warlords). We encourage our customers to think of the handicrafts and artifacts they buy from us as an investment: a piece of history and a way of life that may soon be gone forever.
Kashgar has recently closed its retail outlet and gone completely online.
In the past our pieces appeared in many movies including The Hobbit, Mission Impossible 2, Queen of the Damned, Scooby Doo, Moulin Rouge and Wolverine, and in many televisions series, as well as in plays, commercials and exhibitions. We've found special pieces for individual customers as well as for film sets, event management companies, hotels, businesses, consulates and embassies. The uniqueness of our stock means that we are also very appealing to interior and fashion designers with a taste for the exotic.
There is something for everyone at Kashgar - collectors, the curious, those looking for a special present or for something unique to adorn the home. Most of our items are one-off specialties; other pieces we only stock in small quantities so as to continuously offer a wide and ever-changing range of interesting products. We are also packed with ideas for decorating home and work premises that will challenge your established concepts of design and storage.
Please enjoy - Linda Heaphy

Anything out there about a hairy worm shaped demon with one eye and horns and a unibrow?
